Brazilian artist, Vanderlei Lopes, is a metaphysician. Much like medieval alchemists, he takes base metal and transmutes it into "gold". However, the artist's metal is neither precious nor gold as it dribbles into or out of drains, or lingers on a table top as rings from after-party beverage glasses - or as an after-thought, walked upon without regard by an unknown, boot-wearing workman.
What is precious? Who determines value? These are the the questions we ask when viewing this work.
